It was a disappointing end of last season, to say the least, as WKU went 16-13 and ended the season with a 71-62 loss to Louisiana-Monroe in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. For the first time since 1999, the Lady Toppers were also left out of the post-season. But part of the reason for the somber season results was the loss of the lone senior on the team, Dominique Duck, to a season-ending knee injury in December. Duck's loss left WKU without a senior and even more short-handed in depth. Duck returns refreshed and energized. At today's media day, Duck said it was without question tough to sit on the bench and watch. But the experience helped her pick up tidbits in her leadership. Now, Duck is joined by three other seniors who will help in leading the team, in guard Kenzie Rich and forwards Jessica Magley and Arnika Brown. Duck and Rich are the co-captains. What was also different this time around happened before this season started. Duck said that for the first time since she's been at WKU, the majority of the players stayed on campus all summer to condition and work together on getting better. Magley said the work has paid off, as she feels like the team is further along this season. WKU has always had a rich tradition in women's basketball, dating back to the Final Four days in the 80's. Things aren't back to that level, but they're at least back to the winning attitude and mindset that the Lady Toppers have come to expect.
