East Division

Middle Tennessee State 14-4 (6-1)

Our friends from Murfreesboro are proving why they were picked preseason numero uno in the East. They have been hot all season with some nice wins over UAB, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt. The Blue Raiders are also leading the Sun Belt in attendance with an average of over 5,100 spectators per game.

Their lone Sun Belt loss was to the hands of Arkansas St last week in overtime. The MTSU/WKU game on Janurary 26th will be televised on ESPN2.

South Alabama 8-8 (5-3)

South Alabama has beaten the teams they should in SBC play (FAU, FIU, UALR, ULM, ULL) and have dropped games to teams that should beat them (ASU, MTSU). They also dropped a close game to North Teaxas. Big man #21 Augustine Rubit is averaging a double-double this season, leading the way for USA who is the best rebounding team in the Sun Belt and 52nd nationally. The

Jaguars will have a week off before the WKU game in Mobile on January 24th.

Western Kentucky 10-8 (4-3)

After impressive victories over Florida International and North Texas, the Hilltoppers have dropped three games in a row and snapped their 12 game home winning streak. The Brandon Harris move to point guard was working at first but extended minutes for the first year DI have likely worn the young guard down. The Tops need injured senior guard Jamal Crook back in a bad way. The Toppers could use Crook’s 14.5 points per game as well as his ball handling back on the hardwood.

Western Kentucky will play Louisiana-Lafayette Thursday night at Diddle.

The Floridians 17-17 (7-7)

Florida Atlantic 9-9 (4-3) just left Bowling Green with a big win against a slow-starting WKU team. The Sun Belt’s leading scorer maintained his average of 22 points per game on Saturday night, hitting big shots down the stretch to kill WKU’s run.

The Owls have wins over Troy, Arkansas State, Lafayette, and Western. They have dropped games to Monroe, Middle Tennessee, and South Alabama. WKU will get a shot at revenge on Valentine’s Day.

Florida Atlantic 8-8 (3-4) sits three games behind MTSU in the east. The Golden Panthers have collected wins over ULL and two wins over ASU. They were also a part of a 48-45 victory over Texas Southern. That makes them the first DI team to notch a victory while only scoring 48 points since 1957*.

Troy 7-10 (2-4)

Troy started off the season on a high note with a 56-53 win over Mississippi State but the season has been going downhill since. The Trojans have dropped close games to UALR, WKU, and FAU, and was beaten at North Texas by 17 points. Troy will look to get on track this week, facing both Florida schools.
