High School / Previous School: Barbers Hill High School (Mt. Belvieu, TX)
The Hilltoppers have landed yet another commitment for what is a growing class with a lot of potential. Malone, a linebacker from Texas, begins to fill a gap for the Tops up-and-coming 2024 class.
Reigning from Barbers Hill, Malone is an All-State athlete that was able to come up with 103 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, five sacks, and four forced fumbles in his 2023 junior campaign. Malone has offers ranging Cincinnati to LA Tech, as the District 8-5A Defensive Newcomer of the Year has been a more than impactful presence on the BHHS defensive unit.
What does Malone bring to the table?
Strengths:
Active: Stays active on the field, whether it’s spying the ball or coming down for a tackle
The Ball: Ball instincts are exceptional
Tackling Abilities: Reliable tackler that can handle one-on-one matchups in space
Vision: Keeps eyes in the backfield, reacts well to plays behind the line of scrimmage, makes an effort to be the first to be ball
Quick Decisions: Does a good job reading and reacting the to run pass option
Shredder!: Handles alternative blockers (running backs, tight ends) well, able to extend and track the play
Heavyweight Champion: Plays heavyweight football - will take a ball carrier down with weight and gravity. Pushes weight and explosiveness to get the early lead on a block
Room For Improvement:
Will need to put on size to make up for relatively average height
Plays downhill ball well, but has average sideline-to-sideline and north tracking speed
Can overcommit to the pass rush and end up chasing the play
Malone, based on his abilities as a tackler and vision for the backfield, on top of his room for improvement - he may very well be an impactful inside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme.
The Hilltoppers continue to climb with Malone aboard.
