Justin Martinez, a two-star offensive lineman from St. Lucie West Centennial HS, announced his verbal commitment to the Hilltoppers early this afternoon.
"I talked to Coach Guidry, Coach Mathies, and Coach Taggart," the rising senior said. "I talked to Taggart for about 30 minutes.
"He was so excited about my commitment. He said it was one of the best 4th of July's he's ever had, and can't wait for me to come up there for a visit whenever I can."
WKU 'felt like home'
Martinez chose the Hilltoppers over early offers from Georgia State and FIU, with strong interest coming in from South Carolina, Tennessee, Cincinnati, FAU, Georgia Southern, UMass, Liberty,.
But WKU was the first to offer the 6-foot-3, 264 pound lineman, one of the reasons he decided to commit to the program.
"Well, I wanted to commit during the summer," Martinez said. "I was thinking about my future, and where I want to go.
"WKU felt like home. I love the coaching staff, and I love how they are an up-and-coming program."
Now that he's got his college decision out of the way before starting his senior year, Martinez is ready to enjoy his final year of high school.
"My goal this year is to be the best student-athlete I can be," he said. "And help the younger kids that are coming up be the best that they can be."
