Recruiting Roundup: WKU Football lands 3 Commits

Bowling Green, K.Y. — Three days before National Signing Day, Western Kentucky football received three more verbal commitments.

Dionte Ruffin, Jacquez Sloan, and Cole Spencer pledged to sign with the WKU football program on Sunday, increasing the number of commitments to 20.

Sloan — who is listed at a 5-foot-10 and 165-pounds from Grady High School in Atlanta — gives the Hilltoppers another athlete to use at their disposal. In 2016, Sloan earned an honorable mention all-state selection and first team all-metro selection. Last season, he was used mainly as a receiver, but has the ability to carry the ball as well, although it was a small sample size (four carries for 36 yards). As a receiver, Sloan tallied 62 receptions for 1,252 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also added 202 yards on kickoff returns.

Outside of WKU, Sloan has a scholarship offer from Georgia State.

Spencer — a 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive lineman from Trinity High School in Louisville — will provide some depth on the offensive line for WKU. Spencer also received offers from Tulane and Bowling Green. He helped Trinity High School to a 15-0 record and state championship this season as one of the main anchors on the offensive line.

Despite the coaching changes, Spencer felt comfortable with the new coaching regime that is now in Bowling Green.

"It's feels great to be committed to WKU. Spencer said. "I felt that the new staff is going to take this program to new heights. It feels like home."

In 2016, he was named first team all-state.

Ruffin — who is listed at 6-foot and 180-pounds — played wide receiver and defensive back this past season for Paulding County High School in Dallas, Ga. Outside of the Hilltoppers, Ruffin received scholarship offers from Troy, Buffalo, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Middle Tennessee, Marshall and Rutgers.

In 2016, Ruffin showed his versatility and earned co-athlete and all-purpose player of the year in Region 7-AAAAA, making 58 tackles and an interception on defense while also grabbing 17 receptions for 260 yards and a TD on offense.

At the very least, WKU head coach Mike Sanford had a very good Sunday.
