This morning, the Red team capped its free agency, 'signing' junior offensive tackle Wes Jeffries.
Both the Red and White teams were permitted to 'sign' one defensive player and one offensive player of their choosing. The free agents will skip the spring game draft and will also be entitled to a week of no early morning breakfast checks.
"We started looking at all the players that were available and with us having the number one draft pick, we had some areas to work on, to work with," Red team coach Walter Wells said. "Wes is a proven player in this league. He was on the Red team last year, so for him to re-up with the Red team and get his second contract, it was just a great day for us and for Wes. We just felt he was a guy who had proven it on the field and shown that he's capable of being what we're about, which is a blue-collar mentality on the Red squad."
Jeffries said he's happy to be re-joining the Red team. He played for the Red team last season as well.
"I just wanna go contribute for the Red team and get the win," Jeffries said. "Last year wasn't a good game for us. I was on the Red team last year and it didn't turn out so good."
Jeffries joins sophomore Kawaun Jakes as the two offensive signees. Jakes signed with the White team yesterday.
Now, Jeffries said he's focused and ready to prove he's worthy of being a top offensive player.
"I've worked hard over this past couple of months since the season," he said. "I wanna think I got better and proved myself to the coaches and everybody else."
Sophomore defensive lineman Jamarcus Allen was chosen yesterday as the Red team defensive free agent, while junior defensive lineman Jared Clendenin signed with the White team.
"Jamarcus is a disruptive force in the middle," Wells said. "He plays the game with an enthusiasm, a passion and an intensity that is probably not matched on defense. He'll be the bell cow for the defense. You always wanna build your team inside-out and Jamarcus is one we feel we can do that with."
The Red team is now on the clock for the first pick in tomorrow's draft. Possible candidates include defenders Kiante Young, Bo Adebayo and freshman wide receiver Rico Brown. Check back for more exclusive updates.
