Former WKU basketball star A.J. Slaughter has signed a professional contract with Angelico Biella of Lega Basket Serie A, Italy's highest-level league of professional basketball.
Slaughter will report to his team in early August and will remain in Italy until at least the end of May.
"I'm very thankful for this opportunity," Slaughter said. "It's great to get to go to another country to play basketball and get paid for it. Not a lot of people get the chance to go overseas and do something they love professionally. The level of competition is great. Fred Jones played for them last year and he played for the Indiana Pacers, and [former Louisville Cardinal standouts] Taquan Dean and Reece Gaines played for them a couple of years ago."
After leaving WKU at the end a four-year career in which he finished as the 12th all-time leading scorer, Slaughter competed for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Las Vegas Summer League July 9-18 in an effort to earn a roster spot. In five games, Slaughter averaged 3.6 points per game and shot 40.0 percent from the field. He logged an average of 9.8 minutes per game.
"With the Pistons' summer league team I got a chance to play in front of a lot of people and a lot of teams," Slaughter said. "I felt it was a great experience for me."
Teams in Lega Basket Serie A play a schedule consisting of 30 regular-season games and an eight-team playoff
