So fresh and so clean, clean! It's always a welcome sight to see a fresh Hilltopper football schedule for the 2013 season. The first season under new head coach Bobby Petrino is shaping up to be a very manageable and successful campaign.
The season kicks off with a bang against in-state rival Kentucky, who will look to extract revenge (or remove the dagger from their backs) against the Tops in, of all places, Nashville, TN. The Hilltoppers will travel back down to the Volunteer State the next week and actually face a team located within state borders in the Tennessee Vols.
Also, in non-conference action, Western Kentucky will host Navy and travel to Army, meaning Nick Holt's defense will be tested against a couple of pesky triple option/wishbone offenses which is never an easy task. And last but certainly not least, the highly anticipated announcement that MEAC juggernaut Morgan State will visit WKU on September 21st. The Bears capped 2012 with a 3-8 record, including a 66-6 loss to Akron. The Hilltopper offense should have a field day reminiscent of West Virginia Tech.
The conference schedule features tussles with Sun Belt newcomers South Alabama, Georgia State, and Texas State, all games are on the road. Of course, there are the usual conference suspects in Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette, Troy, and Arkansas State.
The October 3rd road trip to Louisiana-Monroe will be a Thursday night primetime game featured on ESPNU.
And if you didn't think the name Bobby Petrino had power, think again! Western Kentucky's home game versus Louisiana-Lafayette will be a primetime showdown on either ESPN or ESPN2 on a date to be announced (either Tuesday, Oct. 15th or Wednesday, Oct. 16th).
Thanks coach, this is huge for the WKU program! How in the world did you pull this off?
With the 2013 schedule in place, Western Kentucky's future is so bright we may have to wear shades, just like Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson.
