A Unique Journey
Birmingham, Ala., center John Paul has traveled a different path than most in his young athletic career.

Paul, listed at 6-foot-11 and 220 pounds, came to America in Sept. 2011, from the Carribeans.
"We have a lot of great players in the Carribeans," Paul said. "I was recognized for my talent, my coaches helped me get my transcripts and papers together, and I decided to come to America (specifically Alabama) to play basketball.
"I know there are challenges ahead, but that's how life is. Just have to take it one step at a time."
Despite the late start on his basketball career in the US, the rising senior is progressing well, already picking up offers from WKU, Mississippi State, Wichita State, Tennessee Tech, Citadel, Jacksonville, and several others.
The 6-foot-11 prospect has taken several unofficial visits, noting WKU and Mississippi State as those that stuck out.
"I liked Western Kentucky a lot," Paul said. "The campus was really nice, and I really like the coaches there.
"They have great history there too."
Paul plays with tremendous energy, one of the biggest reasons college coaches are recruiting him.
"I give 100% every game," Paul said. "I play with my heart, I always give it my all."
Two key factors
When it comes to making his eventual college decision, Paul listed two big factors that stick out to him.
"I'm looking for a school that I can fit in right away," he said. "I want to be able to contribute right away.
"Conference, things like that doesn't matter to me. I want to be able to help a team win. I'm looking at the education level as well, how good the school is academically. I want to be the first person in my family to get a degree."
Since he's so new to basketball in the US, Paul wants to play through his senior year before making a decision.
"I'll decide after my senior season," Paul said. "I want to see what other offers I have after my senior season."
