Western Kentucky added some more defensive strength and depth to the defense this past week, landing a commitment from Northern Michigan (D2) transfer defensive back Josh Shodipo, who announced he was officially a Hilltopper on Friday.

Prior to entering his name into the transfer portal, Shodipo picked up JUCO experience at Iowa Western C.C. and made appearances in 10 contests for Northern Michigan in the 2021 campaign.

As a Wildcat, Shodipo recorded a total of 30 tackles in 2021, collecting a season-high seven tackles against Saginaw Valley.

The 6-foot-0, 190-pound defensive back out of Lisle, IL. sat down with InsideHilltopperSports.com to go in-depth on his commitment to Western Kentucky, revealing what ultimately led to his decision.

In additon to becoming one of the best teams in college football and winning a championship, Shodipo said that what led to his commitment to the Hilltoppers was the staff and the strong bond he built with WKU assistant coach and defensive backs coach Da'Von Brown over the course of his recruitment.

"It feels great to be joining a program that's had a lot of success and made a name for themselves nationwide. The staff and especially Coach Brown made me feel like I fit in with the program, and they'd look out for my best interests as a player and person on and off the field."

Shodipo said what stood out to him about the Hilltoppers' coaching staff was the range of personalities different coaches had and their extensive knowledge of the game of football.

The D2 standout added that Western Kentucky's offense with an aggressive attacking defense should make the Hilltoppers one of the best teams in the country next season.

"I think the staff has a variety of personalities and that bodes well for the variety of personalities they'll be managing on the roster, with players from many different places. They all have very extensive knowledge of the game and can communicate it in multiple ways."

During his recent visit to Western Kentucky, Shodipo said the resources and overall support the Hilltoppers' program offers was huge for him, especially considering there isn't much a D2 program can offer regarding nutrition, weight room and medical staff.

He said based on what he witnesses at Western Kentucky, the Hilltoppers are setting their student athletes up for success on and off the field. Shodipo also said that seeing the chemistry between the coaches and players and the overall energy was great to see.

"Seeing the resources and support the program offers was great, especially coming from a D2 where there's not too much they can offer with nutrition, weight room and medical staff. From what I saw, WKU will make it as hard as possible for a student athlete to fail."

While he isn't too familiar with the Hilltoppers' roster quite yet, Shodipo said that the players he met during his visit to Western Kentucky and the team's defensive back group really stand out to him. He added that he looks forward to hanging around the defensive backs more to make his transition to The Hill more smooth.

"I don't know much about individual players but the guys I met on my visit and the guys in the DB room would be great to be around to help make the transition smooth."
