Throughout fall camp, InsideHilltopperSports.com is catching up with some of the newcomers on the football team. Wednesday, we spoke with freshman inside linebacker Mario Wright. Here is what the Chicago native had to say.
- Talk about your summer so far, getting on campus and adjusting to campus life, summer workouts, and fall camps?
"I think getting here was a different experience coming from a bigger city to a smaller city. Really getting to know all the other kids was a really big deal because I am really big on relationships. So, getting to meet all my coaches and teammates and getting a chance to interact with them it was really good for me.
"At the start of camp, it was really fast. It was so much different from high school. So, getting here was an adjustment but it's humbling really coming from being a big man at a school to being a small fish in a big pond. Now, I get to learn and go through the process."
- Anything else standing out to you so far in fall camp that is different from this time last year when you were in high school?
"Every lineman is big. That's another thing, the size and having lineman and having big people that can move at a really fast pace is something I have to adjust to. But, I will eventually. One I really get my playbook down and get a chance to go through different film sessions like that I'll be able to learn everything."
- Talk about your position coach and what you've learned from him so far?
"I've learned a lot. I really like how my position coach is up front and just lets you know what you need to do and make sure you get all of your stuff. He's really honest, so if there is anything you need or anything he wants you to know he'll let you know. That's something I always appreciate is honesty and brutally honest if you need to be just so I can make sure I'm on my stuff at all times. He really helps us grow, not just as football players but as young men too."
- What have you learned from the upperclassmen and how have they helped you along with the college process?
"Going into college I figured all the older guys were going to be mean, but they're fine. They are really the ones that help you more than anybody. They just make sure you are on top of your stuff and if you every forget anything they will let you know. If you have a question about anything you just ask them and they'll tell you, so it's great to have older people to look up too."
- Go back to your recruiting process, what did you know about WKU when they got involved and what sold you on them at the end?
"At first I really didn't look into it because I didn't really know anything about Western Kentucky, but when I got the offer I was talking to my recruiting coach and he told me to look into them and I did. It came down to them and Northern Illinois and when I looked into Western and visited, the place is so beautiful and all these different attractions. It just draws you in. But, the relationships with the coaches are people who really care about you and want you to get to where you want to go. That's what really sold me."
- For WKU fans that haven't watched you play, what do you bring to the linebacker position?
"I bring a lot of energy and charisma. You'll probably see me on the sidelines always hyped up and ready to go, but once I get on the field I make sure to bring a lot of leadership and energy and make sure everybody is tuned in."
