The Freshmen Impact Player Countdown Series rolls on as we feast our eyes and focus on the defensive line.
Perhaps, the weakest link position-wise for Western Kentucky going into 2013, with virtually all the starters from last season gone that included efficient gap-fillers like Jamarcus Allen and Quanterus Smith, it's safe to say there will be plenty of opportunities for fresh faces to make contributions along the defensive front.
That's why everyone should get familiar with Kalvin Robinson of Vestavia Hills (Ala.), the 6-foot-5, 225-pound defensive end is a dynamic mix of size and speed coming off the edge. That is a skill the Hilltoppers will look to replenish with the loss of Smith, last season's sackmaster extraordinaire.
Robinson also uses his hands very well coming out of his stance, swatting his opposition aside (reminiscent of the great Reggie White) to explode into the backfield and rattle the cages of quarterbacks and running backs.
So, let's review the credentials:
Size - check.
Speed - check.
Strength - check.
Vision - check.
Odds of contributing as a freshman - very high.
Now, it's not like the cupboard is completely empty along the D-line, there is talent returning with the likes of Calvin Washington, Gavin Rocker, James Hervey, and Bryan Shorter to go along with junior college transfers Raphael Cox and Maurice Bennett.
However, the cupboard could also use some added depth which Robinson is expected to provide and his talents might even push him into a starting role by the time August 31st rolls around. A bold prediction, sure, but it's not so outside the realm of possibilities that it will get me committed to an institution.
So, write it down - Robinson will see the field and make significant contributions along the defensive line this season simply because his talents say so.
