2020 South Warren (Ky.) OL Colt Jackson committed to WKU back in the summer, and has since helped his Spartans pick up right where they left off after last season's Kentucky class 5A state championship.
Now sitting at 10-1 after a first round playoff win over Greenwood, Jackson likes where his team is at as they look to make another deep playoff run.
"I think we've faced a lot of adversary," Jackson said, "but we're getting things together, especially offensively."
Similar to what occurred at WKU this season, Jackson and the Spartans had to adjust to a mid-season injury to their starting quarterback, Caden Veltkamp. Veltkamp may return for this week's second round matchup with fellow 5A powerhouse Bowling Green (Ky.), but the experience gained from the adjusting to a different signal caller could prove to be invaluable for Jackson.
"We just had to pick it up, especially the linemen," Jackson said, "but we just have to handle it."
With the success the Spartans have had over the past several years, the expectations are high year-in and year-out. For Jackson, that high standard has leaked into the growth he wanted to see from himself in his senior season.
"I have pretty high expectations for myself," Jackson said, "and I think I've met a lot of them. I'm looking to be a lot more physical than I have been in the past, and I'm still working every day."
A man of few words, as detailed by South Warren head coach Brandon Smith, Jackson said there are two things that he brings to the table above all: intensity and physicality.
In fact, Jackson has developed a relationship with another 2020 WKU commit that shares those same traits in Hodgenville (Ky.) TE/OL Mark Goode. It's that same mentality that has stood out the most to Jackson about WKU's offensive line.
"The offensive line," Jackson paused and smiled, "they're pretty physical, too."
