In the wake of Mitchell Robinson disappearing like a gypsy in the night, being suspended, then ultimately getting his release from Western Kentucky by head coach Rick Stansbury - many wondered how the Hilltoppers would fill the void?
Look no further than the football team, where former All-Conference USA second team power forward Justin Johnson was adjusting to his new role as a tight end with the football program a little over a week into fall camp.
Was being the key word as of Sunday, where it was announced that Johnson would be re-joining the basketball program to help fill the void left behind by Robinson's abrupt departure.
Johnson will enter his senior season with the basketball program. As a junior, he averaged 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and led Conference USA in double-doubles, tallying 14 total on the season.
Below is a statement from football head coach Mike Sanford on Justin transitioning back to basketball:
“From the beginning, we wanted to help Justin in this pursuit to see if playing football was the right opportunity for him and his future. Ultimately, Justin decided that returning to the basketball court was in his best interest, and we are fully supportive of him in that decision. He was a tremendous teammate and addition to our locker room during his time with the program. We look forward to supporting Justin and the rest of the basketball team this upcoming season.”
