Western Kentucky has officially named their next head coach in Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Sanford.

The 34-year old Sanford replaces Jeff Brohm, who left Western Kentucky to take over as the head coach at Purdue.

Sanford has spent the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, where the Fighting Irish averaged 466.4 yards on offense and 34.2 points per game in 2015. In 2016, Notre Dame had a disappointing 4-8 season where the offensive production dipped a bit, averaging 417.6 yards and 30.9 points per game.

Prior to Sanford's stint at Notre Dame, he served as the offensive coordinator at Boise State, his alma mater.

He also coached running backs, quarterbacks, and wide receivers at Stanford from 2011 to 2013.

Sanford spent the 2010 season as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Western Kentucky former head coach Willie Taggart. In that season, the Hilltoppers went 2-10 and averaged 318.2 yards and 22.4 points per game and coached former quarterbacks Kawaun Jakes and Brandon Doughty.

While Sanford did not have full play-calling duties with the Irish, he is considered one of the bright offensive mind that is well thought of in the coaching community.

He is the son of Mike Sanford, Sr., the current head coach at Indiana State, longtime assistant and former head coach at UNLV.
