It was September 2nd when Maryland graduate transfer Tyrrell "Piggy T" Pigrome was officially named WKU's starting quarterback for their week one matchup versus Louisville.

Head coach Tyson Helton opened up Wednesday's zoom conference with the news many WKU football fans were expecting to hear all fall camp long.

"We're going to go ahead and name the starter, that's going to be Piggy T," Helton said. "He's really looking forward to that opportunity. I think he's excited and our team is as well."

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound dual-threat quarterback comes in with 34 games of playing experience under his belt from the University of Maryland.

While at Maryland, Pigrome split time with other quarterbacks on the roster, but was able to show off the attributes that will make him a dangerous part the Hilltoppers' 2020 offense.

Offensive coordinator Bryan Ellis says the focus is on getting him acclimated to WKU's system and working to get better every day.

"I think what he's coming from at Maryland, and what we do are pretty big differences," Ellis said. "We're just continuing to master the game plan, and thankfully we have another week."

In what has been an abbreviated fall camp, deciding the starting quarterback has been no easy task. As recent as last week Coach Helton said all five quarterbacks on the roster were getting reps in practice.

The task of winning the job itself was challenging for Pigrome. The Birmingham, Alabama native detailed that just because he has a lot of experience, doesn't mean he is automatically the guy.

"I wouldn't say it gives me a heads up. It's more of, if I do wrong don't play me," Pigrome said. "If I'm doing good, it is what it is. If someone is playing better than me, play the guy that's doing better. I'm here to compete. It's about who's the guy. Who's going to be the guy?"

Although Pigrome may not have been "the guy" at Maryland, he certainly has what it takes to boost WKU's offense to what it was last season, if not better.

In a relatively small sample size, take a look at what Pigrome compiled stat wise for the Terrapins.

While there may not be too much to take away from these stats, it is worth noting Pigrome's mobility.

Last season, Arkansas graduate transfer Ty Storey compiled seven rushing touchdowns for WKU. Coming into WKU, Storey had a career total of one.

With what Pigrome has managed to put together so far at Maryland, it can only get a boost in Helton's dynamic offense. Pigrome says he's already impressed with the athletes he sees on the field in practice.

"Whatever look we're in it's a good feeling. We got two great slots. One of the best slots I've ever played with," Pigrome said. "I feel like we got some weapons, and some people in the backfield."

The Hilltoppers return just over 170 catches and over 1,700 yards from their receiving game in 2019. Of those returning receivers, Pigrome says senior Jahcour Pearson is one of the most impressive athletes he's ever played with.

"He's electric and exciting to watch. His routes are hard, he shows speed, he can do whatever, outside, inside," Pigrome said.

Pigrome has all the tools he needs to be successful at WKU. An offensive line that returns four starters, and a 1,000 yard rusher from a season ago will guide him as long as he stays calm under pressure and runs the offense.

"I feel like the team right now is already full of energy. It's helping me out," Pigrome said. "Them having energy just helps me bring energy to the table. We just gotta keep it going, and keep it going at a high level."

What's most encouraging about Pigrome is the fact that Helton and staff have experience grooming overlooked graduate transfers.

Coming into WKU, quarterback Ty Storey had a career 11 to 10 touchdown to interception ratio with a sub 60 percent completion percentage.

Those aren't exactly mouthwatering numbers you want to see from a graduate transfer.

The numbers Pigrome comes in with are almost eerily similar. Pigrome's career touchdown to interception ratio sits at 9 to 10, while his completion percentage stands at 56.7.

Storey ended up bringing home C-USA's newcomer of the year award in 2019 along with a 14 to 7 touchdown to interception ratio to go with a solid 69.9 percent completion percentage.

If Helton was able to turn Storey into a more than serviceable starter, expect nothing less than the same from the versatile Pigrome.

"I feel like we both got different strengths, so I wouldn't even compare myself to him," Pigrome said. "What he did with the team last year, his strengths worked good. Hopefully I can do the same thing with my strengths, just help them win, keep doing what they've been doing, move the ball, whatever I can do to help."
