Let's check out how former Hilltoppers are faring and what the expectations are for them going forward as we quickly approach the 2020 NFL season.
Jack Doyle- Tight End, Indianapolis Colts (8th Season, all with IND)
Doyle is one of if not the most prolific tight end to ever grace Western Kentucky's campus and has seen plenty of success in Naptown. The two-time pro bowler is looking to have a bounce-back year in Indy after dealing with injuries and a time share as TE1 with Eric Ebron having success during his stint with the Colts. Paired with one of the best offensive lines in football, Doyle and company look to have continued success on the ground in Indy's grind-it-out, smash mouth approach. In 2018, Doyle was named as PFF's third-best run blocking tight end in the NFL. Doyle will also serve as Philip Rivers' new security blanket as he has hauled in at least 40 balls for 440 yards and 4 scores in seasons where he has been targeted at least 70 times.
George Fant- Offensive Tackle, New York Jets (5th Season, first w/ NYJ)
Fant is most often remembered as a Hilltopper hero on the hardwood who was a double-double machine. However, Fant became a part of the WKU football team in his final year on the Hill and it paid off. Literally. In April, Fant signed a 3 year, $30 million dollar contract with the New York Jets to help add depth to one of the league's inferior offensive lines. Fant spent the first four seasons in Seattle with the Seahawks as a hybrid lineman/as an eligible receiver. Fant has seen 24 starts and over 1,500 snaps in his NFL career across 46 games. Fant will be battling second-year tackle Chuma Edoga for the right to be in the first five for the Jets this fall.
Tyler Higbee- Tight End, Los Angeles Rams (5th Season, all with LAR)
A forgotten part of the Los Angeles Rams offense for most of the Sean McVay era, Higbee exploded across the final few weeks of the 2019 NFL season. Like Doyle, Higbee had been competing with teammate Gerald Everett for snaps in the Rams' offense. Everett suffered a knee injury that opened the door for Higbee's coming out party. From weeks 13-17, Higbee averaged 9 catches and just over the century mark in yards, setting the bar high coming into the 2020 season with the Rams coaching staff now knowing what Higbee is capable of.
Forrest Lamp- Guard, Los Angeles Chargers (4th Season, all with LAC)
It's now or never, make or break, however you want to go about it when it comes to Lamp and the upcoming season. Lamp, who has caught some bad breaks with the injury bug, has only played in 9 games for the Chargers since being selected 38th overall by Los Angeles in the 2017 NFL Draft. An ACL tear in his first day in pads in 2017 and a broken fibula are some of the major setbacks that Lamp has already faced in his young career. He'll be fighting for a spot on the interior of the Chargers' O-line as well as for an opportunity to stay with the team post-2020.
Joel Iyiegbunwie- Linebacker, Chicago Bears (3rd Season, all with CHI)
Primarily a special teams player for the first 2 seasons of his career, Iyiegbunwie has a very unique opportunity in front of him in 2020. The Bears don't have a lot of depth at inside linebacker outside of former Kentucky standout Danny Trevathan and former first round pick Roquan Smith. According to PFF, Iyiegbunwie only logged three snaps on defense in the 2019 season. With COVID-19 uncertainties and the injury history of the two guys in front of him, Iyiegbunwie has a chance to up his total career tackles of 13 by a wide margin.
Taywan Taylor- Wide Reciever, Cleveland Browns (4th Season, second with CLE)
The former standout reciever came into the NFL with high expectations of being the perimeter playmaker that he was in Bowling Green. Taylor spent his first couple of seasons in Tennessee in an offense that didn't play to his strengths. Taylor hauled in 53 balls for 697 yards and a couple of scores in 29 games. Last fall, Taylor was traded to the Browns for a seventh round pick. He only appeared in a handfull of games and saw one target. Taylor will have to earn his spot in a crowded wide reciever room in Cleveland throughout training camp.
Deon Yelder- Tight End, Kansas City Chiefs (3rd Season, all with KC)
Yelder is the only Hilltopper on this list with a Super Bowl ring, as he was part of the defending champs roster when the Kansas City Chiefs hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in February. An undrafted free agent who was cut by the Saints in October of 2018, Yelder spent a lot of time on the practice squad or buried on the depth chart in KC due to the presence of All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce. Yelder has three catches for 50 yards in his career and will be battling for the TE2 spot with newly signed free agent Ricky Seals-Jones.
Mike White- Quarterback, New York Jets (3rd Season, second with NYJ)
White became the highest drafted QB in WKU history when the Dallas Cowboys took him 171st overall, surpassing Hilltopper legend Brandon Doughty when he was drafted 223rd overall in 2016. White backed up Cowboys QB Dak Prescott in 2018 while never seeing any on-field action. During the 2019 season, White was waived by the Cowboys and was later added to the Jets practice squad. White will be a part of the Jets QB room in 2020, most likely backing former Tyson Helton product Sam Darnold.
Mik'Quan Deane- Tight End, Cleveland Browns
Deane is currently a part of the Browns practice squad and has been after being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Deane will most likely be a camp body after not seeing any on-field action in the previous season on top of the Browns signing Austin Hooper to one of the richest tight end deals in league history and drafting former FAU Owl Harrison Bryant.
