The Hilltoppers quickly fouled Hazzard, who had gone 1-for-2 on his previous two trips to the line, and he sank both shots to seal the win.
Kenny Ware added 18 points and Richard Delk had 14 for the Trojans (17-10, 12-3 Sun Belt Conference), who jumped Western Kentucky for second place in the conference with the win.
Mendez-Valdez and A.J. Slaughter scored 20 apiece for the Hilltoppers (17-8, 11-3).
