With NFL training camps upon us, InsideHilltopperSports.com takes a look at former Western Kentucky standouts that are looking to make an impact for their teams on those hallowed Sundays starting in the fall.
Bobby Rainey the former standout running back at WKU has spent time on several teams so far in his pro career. He has spent time with the Baltimore Ravens, where he signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and ended up getting himself a Super Bowl ring.
Rainey would later get placed on the injured reserve due to injury which led to him being cut. He would then be picked up by the Cleveland Browns, but was released after week 7. Rainey would finally find his home with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his first year with the Buccaneers, Rainey rushed for 532 yards on 137 carries and 5 touchdowns. During the 2014 season, Rainey added an additional 406 yards on the ground while also compiling 315 yards receiving on 33 catches. Last season was Rainey’s worst of his career, as he would only rush for 16 yards and have 8 fumbles.
Rainey found a new home during the offseason with the New York Giants, where their running back core is led by Rashad Jennings. Other running backs on the Giants roster include Andre Williams, Shane Vereen, Orleans Darkwa, and rookies Marshaun Corprich, and Paul Perkins.
Prediction: Rainey has a shot at a backup role depending on how he does during training camp and will get some snaps because of his quickness and ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
Antonio Andrews enters his third season with the Tennessee Titans after being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He made his NFL debut later that season against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In 2015, Andrews made some noise for the Titans, scoring his first NFL touchdown on September 27th against the Colts while accumulating 520 rushing yards and three touchdowns while also adding 174 receiving yards.
Andrews is now part of a revamped Titans roster that added big-time free agent Demarco Murray to go along with David Cobb, David Fluellen, Bishop Shankey, and Derrick Henry.
Prediction: While it appears Andrews touches may diminish this season with addition of Murray, he still brings the ability to rush for tough yards on 3rd and short situations and the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He can also be an asset in the kick return game as well.
Jack Doyle will enter his 4th season of playing with the Indianapolis Colts this upcoming season. This offseason, the Colts resigned Doyle to a one-year, $1.67 million contract that will make him an unrestricted free agent in 2017.
Doyle has been a great fit for Indy and has been a solid run blocker and a tall, lengthy target for quarterback Andrew Luck in the red zone. He has appeared in all but one game for the Colts since 2013 and has made 35 receptions in his career along with 209 yards and 3 TDs.
The presumed top two tight ends the Colts will likely use will be Doyle and Dwayne Allen, who started 12 games at the position for the Colts last season. The Colts will also have Erik Swoope on their roster who will be entering his second year in the league as well as two rookies, Darion Griswold and Mike Miller.
Prediction: Doyle's experience and familiarity with the Colts offense will definitely give him more playing time over the younger players on the roster and with a healthy Andrew Luck, Doyle could have the most productive season of his career.
Quanterus Smith, the former defensive end standout at Western Kentucky was originally drafted in the fifth round to the Denver Broncos in the 2013 draft.
In his first season with the Broncos Smith was placed on the injured reserve list due to an ACL injury he faced during his senior season of college. During the 2014 season, he appeared in 15 games for Denver totaling 11 tackles and two pass deflectionsbefore being waived in April of 2015.
Since the Broncos, Smith has spent time on the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars practice squads before being signed by the Detroit Lions on July 20th.
Along with Smith, the Lions current defensive end roster consists of Ezekiel Ansah, Brandon Copeland, Wallace Gilberry, Devin Taylor, and rookie Deonte Gibson.
Prediction: With Ansah being the only sure-fire returning starter at the defensive end position, the possibility for Smith to earn a roster spot during training camp and compete for legit playing time seem fair, barring injury.
After being signed as an undrafted free agent last season by the Packers, former Hilltopper tight end Mitchell Henry found his way to Denver after the Broncos claimed him off waivers back in September. He was on the active roster for two of the Broncos first five games of the season.
By week six of last season, Henry found himself back with the Packers after they re-claimed him off waivers from the Broncos and signed him to their practice squad for the remainder of the season. Henry signed a one-year futures contract with the Packers during the offseason that will give him a base salary of $525,000 this upcoming season.
The Packers tight end roster currently consists veteran new addition Jared Cook, last year's breakout star Richard Rodgers, Kennard Backman, Justin Perillo, and Casey Pierce.
Prediction: Unlike last year's training camp, Henry will be playing with two good hands and being fully healthy will likely propel him onto the 53-man roster once the season begins. He will be another viable, athletic tight end weapon that should get quality playing time behind Cook and Rodgers.
Tyler Higbee found himself being selected in the 4th round of the NFL Draft to the Los Angeles Rams. He signed a four-year contract worth $2.92 million dollars and is looking to become another young player to make an immediate impact for the Rams along with top quarterback draft pick Jared Goff.
Higbee joins fellow rookie tight ends Temarrick Hemingway and Benson Browne to go along with second-year player Justice Cunningham and veterans Corey Harkey and Lance Kendricks that are currently on the Rams roster heading into training camp.
Prediction: Overcoming the experience of Harkey and Kendricks for playing time will be tough, but with Higbee's size and ability to catch the ball and run. He should get some quality playing time with the Rams once the regular season starts.
Brandon Doughty was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 7th round of this year's NFL Draft. Doughty signed his four-year, $2.4 million rookie contract with Miami in May and ESPN Miami writer James Walker recently gave Doughty a 40% chance that he will make the 53-man roster.
Ryan Tannehill will be going into his 5th season as starting QB for the Dolphins with long-term backup Matt Moore being Miami's number two on the depth chart. If new Dolphins coach Adam Gase chooses to have 3 quarterbacks on the active roster, that will give Doughty a great opportunity to make the active roster if he is able to learn fast and beat out second-year player Zac Dysert in training camp.
It's not impossible for Doughty to be Miami's third-string QB, but it is very possible he has to be on the practice squad before working his way up. Doughty's accuracy and football IQ sets him above many players and coach Gase seems to like what he has seen from him thus far.
Prediction: I have a good feeling that Doughty will make the 53-man roster with the Dolphins but playing time outside of the preseason is highly unlikely.
Prince Charles Iworah was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 7th round of this year's NFL Draft. Iworah signed his four-year, $2.4 million rookie contract with the 49ers and will join a plethora of young cornerbacks on the 49ers' roster.
Iworah will have to show out in training camp and refine many of his skills if he hopes to make the 53-man roster. Iworah is a raw athlete with a lot of speed which can help set him above some of the corners on the roster, but I feel like he will most likely be on the 49ers practice squad.
He has the potential and physical abilities to be a great player but he has a lot to learn about the position and how to be a cornerback at the NFL level.
Prediction: Iworah could possibly make the roster via being a special teams player but even if he does go to the practice squad, it could be very beneficial for him in the long run and it's not impossible for him to work his way up.
George Fant the former WKU basketball standout and former WKU football player was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as undrafted free agent on May 1st. It is a three-year deal woth $1.62 million dollars where Fant will reportedly make a base salary of $450,000 in 2016.
From all the articles that I’ve read so far head coach Pete Carroll really likes Fant. As he had Fant work out with offensive lineman and the defensive lineman through organized team activities. However, it appears Fant projects to be an offensive tackle within the Seahawks offense.
The rest of the Seahawks offensive tackle roster consists of Lene Maiava, Garry Gilliam, Terry Poole, Kona Schwenke, along with veterans Bradley Sowell and J'Marcus Webb.
Prediction: Despite his limited football background, Fant has all the size, skill, and athleticism to develop into a productive offensive tackle at the NFL level. However, due to the depth at tackle position, Fant may have to spend his first season on the practice squad to get a bit more seasoned for the future.
Jared Dangerfield was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints. He joins a Saints squad in need of some playmakers at the wide receiver position to help their legendary quarterback Drew Brees.
The Saints signed four other rookie wide receivers and have six others with only three years of experience in the league or less on their roster, so if Dangerfield can prove himself in training camp, it's very possible for him to land on the 53-man roster.
If he does beat out some of the other rookie receivers, he would most likely be the fourth or fifth option at receiver.
Prediction: Dangerfield making the 53-man roster may be an uphill challenge, but I think he has a great shot at being on the practice squad and if the other young receivers on the roster don't get the job done, he could have a great opportunity to move up and play eventually.
Antwane Grant joined the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent. Similar to Jared Dangerfield and the Saints, Grant joins a Bengals team that has many young receivers. There are currently four other rookie receivers on their roster which could work in his favor if he's able to learn and adjust to the Bengals offense in training camp.
Grant is a solid athlete with good hands but whether or not he can set himself above the competition is questionable.
In an interview he had with NFL Draft Diamonds, Grant said "I would have to compare myself to a Michael Crabtree or Jeremy Maclin. The way I can use my body against smaller defenders and against the knowledge of the game they both possess is something I can relate to."
Prediction: Though he has a lot of skill, I personally don't see him making the 53-man roster as an undrafted free agent, but it is possible that he'll make the practice squad. He could work out special teams but as far as being a main wide receiver, he would have to learn the ropes and elevate his game.
The former 7th round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders in the 2014 draft, former Western Kentucky safety standout Jonathan Dowling now finds himself on the Buffalo Bills practice squad heading into training camp.
Dowling was released by the Raiders last year just as the regular season was about to begin and was eventually picked up by the Dolphins, who signed him to the practice squad before adding him to the active roster in October.
The Bills picked up Dowling this past December and their safety roster is rich with veterans that include Colt Anderson, Robert Blanton, Corey Graham, Aaron Williams, and Duke Williams to go along with Jonathan Meeks.
Prediction: With the plethora of veterans the Bills already have at the safety position, Dowling has a big challenge ahead of him to land a roster spot once the regular season rolls around. Even if he keeps his head on straight and continues to improve throughout training camp, he may be poised for a practice squad spot.
Other Hilltoppers to keep an eye on:
Cam Thomas was signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent in 2015 but was later cut by the bills after being placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list for the entire 2015-2016 season. He is currently a free agent.
Andrew Jackson was selected in the 6th round to the Indianapolis Colts in 2014. He played in 13 games during the 2014-2015 season making 10 total tackles and 1 sack. He was waived after that season due to multiple DUI arrests. Jackson who is currently a free agent has been trying to get back in shape, he even participated at WKU’s Pro Day this past spring in hopes of landing with another team.
Derrius Brooks signed as an undrafted free agent to the Cincinnati Bengals in 2012 but ended up being released nine days later. Brooks would then sign with the Calgary Stampeders a Canadian football team where he played for two seasons before signing with the New Orleans Saints in January 2014. After being released by the Saints last August, Brooks spent last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad. After Brooks contract expired, he signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders which is where he is currently playing.
