A breakdown of what Western Kentucky head coach Tyson Helton said during Monday's press conference. The Hilltoppers are coming off a 20-14 win at FIU and will face off against Louisville in Nashville on Saturday.
HELTON:
- FIU was a great win for their program and confidence builder, mentioned facing adversity during the game.
- Said finishing was the biggest improvement he saw from week one to week two.
- Said players had the right mindset and practiced what the coaches preached to them.
- Mentioned the defensive secondary performed "outstanding" after performance against Central Arkansas. Said they kept FIU confused all day.
- On John Haggerty - really impressed with his performance so far and ability to change the field has been a huge asset.
- More on Haggerty - mentioned his rugby background saving them on the first punt on a bad snap, having to recover and run and kick it.
- Kicker Alex Rinella is back, but will keep the kicking duties as is with Cory Munson. Will look at Rinella on kickoffs.
- Planning to stay with Steven Duncan and continue develop him as the starter and work through the good and bad.
- Excited to play Louisville and says it will be a great challenge for his team, mentioned it being an exciting stage to play the game in Nashville.
- Says Jahcour Pearson is a guy they can count on in the passing game.
- Mentions the offensive line has done a good job of controlling the line of scrimmage in the first two games.
- Says he never sees Gaej Walker get tired and was impressed with a couple of his two, three-yard runs - says that's the sign of a good running back. Says he's asserted himself as the every down back.
- Mentions Jakari Moses will likely be out the rest of the season.
- Says he was more happy about how his team responded than getting his first win as a head coach.
- Says Louisville is maximizing their talent and putting their best players on the field. They have a lot of team speed on defense. They are exotic on third down and bring different pressures. Says the quarterback has to get the ball out of his hands against their defense.
- Offensively, he says Louisville has a dynamic quarterback. Very cohesive in all three phases. Sees a totally different football team in Louisville from last year's film to this year's.
- Wants team to continue to take the next step after Saturday's win.
- Says they hope to get to the last five minutes against Louisville and find a way to win the game.
