Rick Stansbury and Co. welcomed the winless Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils into Diddle Arena on Sunday and took care of business 96-69.
Hey wait a minute, this isn't Tyler Mansfield.
After a sluggish outing in the 502 a couple nights ago, the Hilltoppers looked to get back on track in their 2020 season home opener.
The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early 20-7 lead, with seven Hilltoppers chipping in in the first 7 and a half minutes of action.
The Tops got the ball out in transition after tracking down long rebounds to create offense in the early going. A good chunk of those points came from the charity stripe, as WKU finished the first 20 minutes 11-of-18 from the line.
WKU dominated the offensive glass as well, especially after missed free throws. Junior transfer Kevin Osawe was huge rebounding missed free throws and even found nylon from behind the arc twice as he put up 15 points and hauled in 7 rebounds off of the bench.
The Delta Devils, despite being 43-point underdogs, competed with a style fairly similar to the Marshall teams that went to the NCAA Tournament. "Hillbilly ball" or a run-n'-gun offense seemed fit to what MVSU wanted to do. MVSU's Devin Gordon drilled four triples on nine attempts in his 21-point afternoon.
MVSU found themselves only trailing by 12 at the half, after the Tops attempted to mirror their style of play despite shooting 4-of-17 from deep at the break.
Charles Bassey continued his excellent play in the early parts of this season, finishing with his third double-double of the year (13 points, 11 rebounds) to go along with four blocks. Bassey ran the floor well, took advantage of size mismatches and even managed to stay away from the three-point line.
Kam'Ron Cunningham put in a heroic second half effort to keep it close for MVSU, scoring 12 straight to try and cut into the Hilltopper lead, but the Tops' depth and physicality on the glass was just too much as they were able to pull away in the final 10 minutes of the second half.
Taveion Hollingsworth led the Tops in scoring with a quiet 16 point performance in his final Diddle Arena season debut. Jordan Rawls provided solid volume shooting off the bench with 12 points to go with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Western was an abysmal 8-of-26 from downtown (MVSU 12-35) but out rebounded the Delta Devils by 31 which led to multiple second-chance points and a healthy amount of attempts from the free throw line.
WKU moves to 3-2 on the year and up next will welcome Gardner-Webb to Diddle Arena, who is yet to play a game this season.
