WKU heavily in the mix for Maryville (Tenn.) LB

Maryville (Tenn.) linebacker Mason Shelton took a visit and picked up an offer from the Hilltoppers back in February.

Since then, the coaching staff has remained in constant contact with the talented 2020 prospect.

"I talk to their linebacker coach, Coach (Maurice) Crum, pretty often," Shelton noted. "Also, I'll talk to Coach (Tyson) Helton every once in a while. I've talked to almost everyone at one point."

The three-star prospect likes the direction of the program under new head coach Tyson Helton and thinks he would be a great fit in the Hilltoppers' stingy defense.

"I just like what Coach Helton is developing the team into and the vision he has for it. I also really like Coach Crum. I feel I fit in the defense well too."

At 6-foot-2, 210-pounds, Shelton displays a lot of different skills at the linebacker position - all attributes that linebackers coach Maurice Crum likes.

"(He likes) how well I can run for my size and my versatility in the open field and in the box."

When asked if Western Kentucky will get another visit.

"For sure, I'll definitely be back up there either for a game or another visit," Shelton replied.

Louisville, UAB, and Coastal Carolina are other schools that are also showing a lot of interest in the East Tennessee product.

This summer will be busy for Shelton, who has a few visits set up, including a couple of camp stops to power five programs.

"I got Louisville and Vanderbilt camps coming up soon and I'm probably going on a visit to UAB and Coastal Carolina soon."
