Not much is flying under the radar in college basketball with the FBI scandal looming, but there are some great games that need to be seen. On Thursday, WKU (22-7) travels to Murfreesboro, TN to challenge Conference-USA leading Middle Tennessee (23-5).
The Blue Raiders lead the Toppers by a full game in the conference standings and can clinch the C-USA title outright with the win.
Here is the breakdown for the game:
OFF THE BENCH: Middle Tennessee will play a ten deep rotation. Tyrik Dixon and Edward Simpson will get a majority of the minutes off the bench, but neither guy is averaging over five points a game. This is a starter heavy laden team in terms of production. Expect the bench to provide quality minutes to the starters. In the first meeting, Karl Gamble provided a lift with 8 points and 5 rebounds, while Dixon helped ice the game at the free throw line late.
OFF THE BENCH: After having virtually no bench for much of the season, the Hilltoppers have some depth to come in and help the attack. Marek Nelson and Josh Anderson will play a vital role in the game. Anderson has some spot starts this year and it is possible to see him with the starters come tip time. Jake Ohmer will see some minutes as a spot up shooter. Moustaphe Diagne is still struggling to find his footing in college basketball, but can still provide valuable minutes in what assures to be a physical game.
THREE KEYS TO THE GAME:
1. Contain Nick King. In the first match-up King was able to get whatever he wanted to the tune of 28 points. King has tormented C-USA this season by averaging over 21 points and eight rebounds per game. He plays physical and smart. King was able to silence the crowd in Diddle on numerous occasions during their first meeting. This time around, he is going to have a home crowd that will be fired up to take down WKU and claim a regular season crown in C-USA.
2. Three is Key. In the first match-up the Hilltoppers were only able to connect on 1-of-9 from three-point range, while MTSU connected on only 4-of-17. Both teams average over 75 points on the season but played to a 66-62 final in the first meeting. If one team can establish themselves from the outside it will open the interior. WKU is more successful when they are able to stretch the floor and create post opportunities for Dwight Coleby and driving lanes for LaMonte Beard, Darius Thompson and Josh Anderson.
3. Handle the Pressure. The conference regular season title is on the line. It is a heated rivalry. Both teams are playing for a spot in the NCAA tournament. Middle Tennessee is looking for a season sweep. If the Toppers can handle the pressure, play relaxed and let the game come to them, then they stand a great chance of coming out with a win. MTSU is led by two seniors in King and Potts who have been there and done that, so do not expect them to crack at home.
BOTTOM LINE:
This game comes down to big time players stepping up to make big plays in a rivalry series that always delivers excitement. MTSU is riding a 10-game winning streak and WKU has reeled off six straight of their own. RPI, seeding, and bragging rights are all on the line and there should be a sellout crowd. The Blue Raiders should win this game at home.
Prediction: MTSU 70, WKU 63
Player of the Game: Nick King. Expect him to have another huge outing on Senior night.
